2011 Gold Coast Winter Carnival - Update and Revamp - Brilliant 02/12/2010
Even though it’s only the first week of summer, the new Gold Coast Tweed Winter Bowls Carnival committee has been full on with formulating a new program of events for the 62nd year of this unique carnival – promoted as the longest running Bowls Carnival in the World.
New Chairman Roger Goodridge has made giant strides in re formatting the program to suit the many thousands of visiting bowlers who enjoy the Gold Coast winter sunshine and of course the perfect greens during the winter months.
The most significant and welcome change is no more mat fees during the tournament with upfront one fee payable, per event, and this can now be done online to the Gold Coast District office.
The Mens & Ladies 2011 Winter Carnivals will now run concurrently which is also a step in the right direction especially for the visitors on the coast, playing over several weeks at the same time makes sense.
Chairman Roger has been extremely proactive in promoting this “new look” Winter Carnival to one and all and should have the backing of all the clubs in the Gold Coast Tweed as the more visitors playing on the greens is certainly welcome revenue to all clubs which no doubt are feeling the effects of the financial meltdown and of course rising electricity and water costs.
The 62nd Gold Coast Tweed Winter Bowls rolls off on Thursday July 7th with sectional play in 3 bowl mixed pairs followed by the Mens Open & Over 60’s 3 Bowl Pairs on Saturday Sunday and continuing through during the week concluding with the finals on Thursday July 14th.
The 3 Bowl Pairs format is different from the old 2*2*2*2 traditional pairs format and will be welcome by the older playing members.
The Ladies Fours are played on the same weekend as the Mens Pairs and also conclude with finals on July 14th – Bastille Day
Mens Open 2 Bowl Triples and 60 & Over Fours commence on July 17th continuing till the final day on Thursday July 21 and at the same time the ladies Pairs starts on the 17th and finishes on July 21
Mens and Ladies Singles are played during the same week with the ladies commencing on July 21 to July 23 and the Men plays Wednesday July 20th concluding on Friday July 22.
All this information and more can be found on the Gold Coast Tweed web site or by contacting Carolyn in the Palm Beach office on 07 5534 1273.
Chairman Roger along with District President George Thompson have put in a great deal of time and effort to revitalize the popular carnival and should be congratulated for their efforts but more so supported by the local bowlers with an increase in local entries in 2011.
The souvenir Gold Coast Winter Carnival bowls shirt should proved popular with the visitors as a memento of playing in this prestigious carnival on the best greens in Australia , if not the world.
The shirts are available in limited numbers and can be purchased at the Tweed Bowls Shop.
Of course, one of the major attractions to visitors coming to the coast to play is the preceding tournament from July 3 till 6, the Tweed Prestige Open Mixed Singles and for the second year , the BCIB – PBA Australia versus PBA New Zealand International Challenge Singles on the Tweed Heads Indoor Green from Friday July 22 till Monday July 25.
PBA New Zealand send the top 4 ranked bowlers to challenge PBA Australia and last week their 4th ranked player Raika Gregory won the New Zealand Open Singles so the Aussies can expect anther tough series against our Kiwi mates from across the Tasman.

Rumours or Fact ?
Fact: * NEW RULE CHANGES EFFECTIVE 1/1/2011 *
Implementation of new laws
03.11.10
The new laws will come in to effect across Australia on January 1, 2011
At a meeting of the BA Board last Friday afternoon (October 29, 2010) it was resolved that the Australian implementation date for Laws of the Sport of Bowls – Crystal Mark Second Edition will be January 1, 2011.
It should be noted that the new laws will apply to all competitions nationwide – there shall be no exceptions to any competition in Australia.
The Board arrived at this decision after careful consideration (and advice from the National Officiating Committee) of the two previously publicised dates (January 1, 2011 and April 1, 2011) and a directive from World Bowls that each Member National Authority (MNA) must change uniformly – not separate states and territories changing at their own time. Each state and territory was consulted on their preference which was also taken into consideration.
Due to the seasonal nature of our sport and the variances across Australia, finding a date which suits all is impossible. Therefore, Bowls Australia looked at the cleanest date available for the changeover, noting that the majority of STAs were keen to see the changes brought in as soon as practicable.
The two law changes which potentially impact the most on the game (‘giving the mat away’ and ‘21m v 23m’) were overwhelmingly requested by the club bowler in the review process and it would be remiss of Bowls Australia not to implement the changes as soon as possible.
The new law books will be delivered by December 17, 2010 and will be available for purchase shortly after from the state / territory associations and Bowls Australia

I was at one of the clubs this week and found out more information about the so called "Rule Changes" That are to be discussed at World Bowls in October. A very reliable involved person told me that even when they have the meeting in October it will not be until a few months into 2011 that they will take effect. There is an article evidently on Bowls Auctralia website about what Bowls Australia has requested from World Bowls. I have not see it yet though.

I heard a Rumour today that World Bowls have had a meeting and have decided to let each individual country choose if they want to change the Jack Length and Mat Give away rule to suit themselves. Word has it that Bowls Australia are to go back to 21 Metre Jack Length Minimum also winners of the previous end will NOT be allowed to give the mat away. This information should be common knowledge by early August but not sure if it will effect Pennant. As soon as I hear Confirmation I will put it on this site. We are seeking Confirmation from Bowls Australia.
