Merv Austin and I played together for the 1st time today. We played Jimmy Suttie and Tony Regan on a Slow top green. We won 30-7 and Merv played really well as Skip. I led not too bad but a sore knee for some reason put me off a bit but we won the day. They green was holding with a tricky swirly breeze. We shared the prize money with Toby and his Beenleigh partner Malcolm who took a Big pair of scalps today who could not handle the slow green. No names to be mentioned but those who were there knew. Good warm up for me for tonights trial at Cabarita against Condong in Pennant Trial.

Brian Lamb and I had 2 good hard games again today. 1st game against Rob Watkins and Jim Cook We Won 13-8 in a tight game and both played well. 2nd game against Sam and Peter Rose. We played well although were 0-6 down after 3 ends we fought back to be 15-11 on the last end. Holding 3 shots Sam trailed the kitty for 4 shots. Brian tried to drive a shot out on the last to prevent a draw but took our bowl out and we dropped a 5 so lost 15-16. Nice one Brian.
Vince Beckley and I played Bev Crisp and Trevor Wheatley again and another good game. We both played good bowls on a hot steamy day and slow green from the rains but got to a 24-6 lead. They came back at us towards the end and we won 29-15 and came 2nd overall.
Grant Osborne and I played in the Enduro today and had 3 good games and came 2nd overall.
I skipped today so Grant could give us a better start. 1st game started with terrific heads against Jeff Mearns and Ralph Hunt. Some great bowls played but good bowls and the luck went our way and we won 21-5. The score never indicated the quality of the game. 2nd game against George Yealand and Kevin Watson. Had to work hard to get into a good position and after 12 ends leading 14-7 but a 3 on the 13th meant they needed 4 to tie. They actually held their four with 4 stunning bowls from George and Kevin and I needed a drive with my last bowl to disturb the head. I managed to get 1 bowl out with a slightly wide drive and we survived for a 14-13 win. A draw in this comp means you dont win it. So 2 wins and 1 shot in 2nd overall place on the ladder. Only 3 x 2 game winners after the 2nd Round. 3rd and final game was always going to be hard against David Latchford and Ray Beavis. We started a little shaky not adapting to the change of rink easily and were down 1-9 after 6 ends. 2 x 2's and a fortunate 7 slid us into the lead and when Ray drove and took his only bowl out and gave us another 5 and were then in control. We won the game 21-15 and held 5 shots on the last end before Ray drove and got 2 shots. David playe a good controlled game. Ron Lewis and Ted Reid had a good set of 3 wins and beat us by 6 shots overall. Kevin Watson had a good win over John McVinish to put him out of the running as after round 2 there were only 3, 3 game winners. Oh well a good day. Grant Bowled well again and I played fairly well but a few lose ends probably cost us the margin we needed, Abdul Latif and I start our attack on the District Pairs today. Nice weather for it..
3 1/2 hour round trip for nothing. Decisions need to be made earlier in this sort of weather. It was called off once we got there at 8.50am. Peter Thompson owes his life to Fergus (Pictured in Action)
. As Peter was hanging out his under garments on the line today, a Brown Snake slithered across the garden in front of him. In one foul swoop Fergus Grabbed the snake and killed it. The amazing act of Bravery from Fergus saved the day. Fergus must be a member of A.S.I.O as Peter has no idea where he sleeps in the house !!!! Ken Wilson and I tried to make it 6 from 6 pairs wins against Ipswich Swifts.
We failed, well I did anyway. Overall Bronze won 3-2 thanks to Blairs fine win in Singles, Grant and Robbie 6 shot win in the Pairs and a last end Victory to John McVinish fors team got us home. Bob Avery lost on an extra end by the closest of measures. My Pairs. Ken played well again all day and I started roughly after a 5 hours wait for the Gold to finish on the Indoor as the rainy weather meant that someone had to go 1st. Dropped a 7 and a 5 and thats the margin we lost by 15-27. We were also limited to 18 ends not 21 and we always come home strongly. Even with 3 ends to go we were in with a chance but all credit to Steve Lunn and Gary Ayre who played some good shots at vital times when we were holding and we never had our normal luck so it went against us today. We have made the finals anyway and it will be different there. More confident and more upbeat with noise, not the morge atmosphere we had tonight. We had a few supporters but mainly Ipswichs Gold side. Thanks for those who stayed to watch us. Gold had a great 3-2 win at last. The 2 Pairs of Sam Granata and Troy Corba and Bobby Lee and Greg Hughes won and a wonderful effort by Peter Thompson who won the Pairs 31-30 in a dog fight or could I say Cat fight!!!!!! Rest day today as Big Week ahead starting tomorrow with Super Challenge against Swifts. Sunday at Ocean Shoes and District Pairs with Abdul Latif, Monday Enduro with Grant Osborne and normal week until Friday all dayer at Greenslopes with Grant Osborne.
Pulled up very well after 12 hours bowls yesterday. Brian Lamb and I played here today and it was very hot day as usual for here. The greens seemed to run well but were very difficult. They had no run and it tended to unsettle us. 1st game against Richard Allen and Charlie Klaverstyn (Cabarita). We played well and it was a good game but they managed to come away with the Win as Richard and Charlie played some good shots towards the end which we had no answer to. Lost 10-17 dropping a 3 on the last end when chasing 5 to win. Once you lose 1, thats it. 2nd game we played Steve Quinn and John Felton (Murwillumbah) and had a good win 23-9. We never let them settle and played good attacking bowls. 3rd game against Graeme Sharp and Trevor Manders, we done all the hard work and led 17-7 with 2 ends to go and dropped a 7 and 3 to draw 17-17. Discraceful exhibition by Brian and I. Lost our draw completely. I think at that stage we were over it and wanted to get to Cabarita for our trial game in the evening but still...... Good day, Good comp but we should have done better.
After hard day at Murwillumbah we had 6.30 pennant Trial against Pottsville in Div 1. Bill Creidon, Ian Turnbull, Mario Azzapardi and I skipped. We played against Micheal Turner (Onions-Kingscliff). After 15 ends 12-12 but I dropped last 3 ends after numerous Kills by Michael to go down 12-19 after 18 ends. Very good game. We all played pretty well especially Bill leading brilliantly. Thanks Guys.. Will be a good season. Alot of our guys were not available tonight so we are going to be a lot stronger when we start.
