Playing with Frank Vesco today. See how we go…
******************************************************************************************************************* Franky Played Great Bowls all day. 1st game we played outdoors Rink 17 against Dave Cooke (Southport) and Andrew Hodgskin (Burleigh Now Helensvale) and we had a great win 19-7. We got a 6 and 3 on first 2 ends as Dave and Andy struggled with the weight on the slowish green and we settled earlier than them. Luckily Andrew has not played bowls for a while as I know how he plays when he's in form. Anyway a good start. 2nd game was Indoor Rink 7 and it was pretty quick and we drew against Robbie Dobbins and Grant Osborne. Robbie using a Size 4 SRV and usually uses a 3H bowl so struggled a bit on the quickish Green. Grant Fresh from the UK and a little searching for weight struggled also and we had a good win 20-12. Not enough for the Big Money as 15 won it and 12 runners up of winners but we had 8 so was happy about that. 2 Wins although luckily the 2 teams we played were a little out of form this time. No Bowls for me Today and probably just as well with the rainy and cool weather around.
I made a Visit to Musgrave Hill and watched some of their Friday Morning PAIRS. Great to have a Friday Morning Comp on - Open PAIRS. Its going well .. Need More Teams for even more Prize Money... Give it a go…. Bob Brown and I would hope to play PAIRS today but what with the rainy weather and a Green out also 15 visitors, Might be Triples or even Fours today…. **************************************************************************************************************** We actually had PAIRS outdoors against Cliff Jones and Red Edwards. We had a good game and got a 2 and 4 on 1st 2 ends and a 5 mid way which gave us a good lead which we needed as Cliff and Red came back at us and we only Won 21-18 in the end but a good fun games. Red and Brownie were very good and no wrong Biases also Ralph had none next door. He must have been concentrating hard in his game against Ray Glasser. Welcome Back Grant Osborne from the UK for another 6 Month Tour of Duty. Look forward to our Thursday Morning PAIRS and other events throughout the next 6 month.
Weather Permitting Latif and I will play here today.
We Beat the Weather and played against Wayne Krohn and Ian Brighton Would have liked an easier game but was great to play against them as we knew it would be hard but we struck a tricky slowish green which Ian never really mastered, Wayne Bowled pretty well all day and Latif and I had our share of (No Luck) to get an unexpected good 27-12 win. There were amazing Scenes inside the club house after the game when a High profile Bowler suggested his bowls might be up for sale after dropping an 8 and even a 7 during the game This High profile Bowler will remain anonymous (Same name as "The Dragon" in the Kids Movie (Pete's Dragon}, owing to the value I hold for my life at present but his partner was a little bit "Crabby" about the situation. By the Way Alan, The Greens Ran very well dispite the rains overnight. Latif and I will try and beat the Rain thats forecast for today.
We had a Great game against Robert Pollock and Ian Miller. Latif and I played very well and had a good win 34-17 but would have been heaps more but for the ability of Ian Miller who played some great bowls when he was under the pump many times. Once he just missed out when we held 7 and Latif drew for 8 with his last bowl and we got another 8. Now daylight Saving here its an early Queensland start at 11.30am (12.30pm) NSW Time so I get home earlier which is good. Playing with Brian Lamb today.
****************************************************************************************************************** Cabarita Greens Speeds were pretty good and we beat the cloudy weather and wrestled with the swirly Wind to have 2 good games. 1st game against Peter Rose and Brian (Pottsville) had a good win 14-6. 2nd game against an always Tough Doug Moir and Brian Kent. We won 10-7 but could get no margin and just 7 ends. Good Days Bowls and Hope nice and early as 12.30PM NSW Start, 11.30 AM Qld Time. Suits me just fine... https://sites.google.com/site/paradisepointbowlsclub/
This is the Latest Entry….. Support Erwin as he's doing a Fabulous Job. Kevin Fowler has been doing the site while Erwin has been away and Done a Very good job but now Erwin is back…. Friday 23/10/2015 Hello g'day and how are you going? I have been away for quite some time now. Kevin looked after the side in the meantime and I thank you lots Kevin; well done! I will be trying to pick up where I have left off, meaning “not so daily information” - the name Ralph justed popped up in the back of my head, now it’s Bobby Brown, hmmm?. Picking up that thread, by now most of us have realized that one Club icon, Handbrake (here with Red), went back to his place of birth for a five month relieve. We already miss you mate. Yet another “big Club name” is due to arrive in two weeks time, Grant Osborne and his much lovelier wife. Welcome back Grant. I guess Grant will be a bit grubby that the Open Singles are all but over and so he will have no chance to make an impression there. Sorry about that mate. Apropos Championships: This is not an Official explanation guys - but my take on it. The Championships are in a Phase of re-adjusting as by now everyone will have realized. The Calendar year for Championships is re-adjusted for two reasons a) to mirror the financial year which goes from July to June and b) the main reason to ease the ‘congestion’ during the Super Challenge and Pennant period and to spread the events more evenly over the year. Personally I hope that the new time plan will be a reflection of increased skill, meaning the Novice and B Championships at the begin followed by the Open Singles and Fours to the last. We have 15 Competitions running. I've made a simple calculation: Every Comp needs at least four playing days - four weekends usually - that’s 60 weekends. Now realize that we have eight(8-10) weekends busy with Pennants and twelve(12-14) weekends with Super Challenge. Add to that an increasing Club Major Events Calendar so far filling five (5) weekends we have to take nearly 30 weekends plus a couple of Holiday weekends away. Meaning we have about 20 weekends for Championships when we would need 60! Extending that thread this means that assuming one is playing two social days during the week and like to participate in the Championships - then one already is playing three times - at least! Now add to that, one wishes to participate in some Major Events and maybe is selected for Club Competition - that’s four Games per week, some all day long - all year round and that's without the "Special Days" like Patrons, Presidents day and so on! There has to be a certain saturation, - something has to give. No wonder Saturday afternoon died and I expect the social days will be the ones continue to suffer, meaning less participation, less energy, less …! Enough of that. Listening the last couple of weeks intently I have come to the conclusion that we have a new “power pair” Millsie and Jim Heron have been on a winning Spree lately. Congratulation boys! I also noted a few new faces in the Club. I am sure one cannot call it an influx yet but it is certainly a positive development. Looking ahead Sam Granata has been picked yet again as District representative. This time in the District Bowls Team 60 and Over Quad Series and will be playing this weekend. All the best Sam; if yesterday's game is anything to go by - you will be doing just fine! Championships The year 2015 is coming to an end with all but the Mixed Fours completed. Mark Vogler, Jim Suttie and Rosemarie Nussbaum are very deserving winners of this years Mixed Triples Trophy. The Title of "Champion of Club Champions" for 2015 goes to Bob Avery. Winner of the Mixed pairs with Leslie Lamond and the Open Triples with Wayne Krohn and Ian Brighton. A very warm Congratulations to a very deserving winner. Although one Competition is still to come, Bob has a demanding lead and so the early announcement can be made. Which brings me to the Presentation Night on Saturday the 7th of November. I understand Management is very supporting of this event so please spread the word, come along for a little dance and a good time and demonstrate with your appearance that Club Championships are still THE Event to shine. As Sam Granata once put it. "IF you want to make a statement about your Bowling Skills, that's what Club Championships are for". Points to Ponder It's nothing new and I came across reading about Nobel prize laurates. J.K Rowling reminded us in a speech that most Dilemmas in life revolve around belonging and betrayal, the Power of the group and the courage it takes to be an individual. Paradise Point Prestige Fours – 10 & 11/10/2015 Another big tournament held at Paradise Point once again attracted a very impressive field. Two days of great weather saw some good bowls and certainly some good comradery. I noticed some Australian Open Finalists (pairs) playing on rink 9. Sam White faced off against Sean Baker and turned the tables with a “best performed” win in the final game. This match also resulted in Sean’s team dropping out of the top 8 and I also note Warren Mills and his team’s 15 – 12 win over the 3rdplaced team knocked then back to 8th. Sean gave me a bit of an insight into how he picks which tournaments to play in and as a Club we should be very happy to have an Australian Open Champion playing with us. I am not going to decipher any other results but to suffice to say if you take your foot off the pedal then disaster can await. I have just used up my Bathurst 1000 pun. The worthy winners of the tournament were the Scott (Dynamo) De Jongh led team of Peter Leon, Brendan Hoey and Mar Waitai with a 17 point margin. Scott has been having some success at the Club recently and it is good to see a player of his calibre with us as well. Kurt Brown ably led his team of Sean Johnson, Tim Smith and Peter Deutchman into second position. Both teams were undefeated however I am sure Kurt would have been a bit nervous on the last end of their last game against Morgan Scott and his team 11 of merry men (Trevor Scott, Bruce Ashbrooke and Jed Scott). Morgan’s team came second last however with the score 10 – 8 and holding 1 it was up to Morgan to pick up a couple more to win. His last bowl was wide of the mark however the result and end of match congratulations typified the competitive spirit in which the tournament was conducted. Morgan’s moustache was also a beauty. Red Edwards and Robbie Dobbins picked up 4th and 5th positions. Robbie’s team aggregate 300 in age and it is a great thing that they can still enjoy their bowls. Congratulations to Sam, office team, umpires and catering volunteers for another great weekend at Paradise Point Bowls Club. Vince Beckley and I played Kim Silk and Joe Cacace and had a good game on a well used middle green. I Played pretty well and was close game all the way although we just failed to capitalise on a couple of heads and early on when holding 5, Joe trailed for 5 when we were getting to a good lead. Some Really Good ends where they changed for and against us. Went down 18-20.
Start of Gold Coast Indy or whatever they call the Shit. Wont be Bowling as too hard to get back home afterwards. Will go out later but in other direction..
